UMass Amherst Mt. Ida Campus
Newton, MA
Beginning with the renovation of Malloy Residence Hall, Ryan Associates worked with Mount Ida College (now UMass Amherst) over the course of nearly a decade to restore, revitalize, and re-image key spaces and the overall character of the campus.
These projects included the restoration of the forecourt garden entry to Shaw Hall, the original estate manor house, and college administration building. At Holbrook Hall, a similar transformation pedestrianized the former stables courtyard. Both areas had been paved for parking and drop-off, retaining none of their former character. New planting, paths, seating, and lighting bring these spaces alive. With Shaw being the first stop of every college visit and Holbrook serving as the front door, one of the primary academic centers, these renovations transformed first-time impressions and the day-to-day reality of life on campus. Additional projects included designs for additional courtyard renovations, the reconfiguration of the main entrance at Carlson Avenue, circulation and maintenance studies, a memorial to a student-athlete, and aiding a graduating class with select courtyard seating for the class gift.
